Botox, Restalyn, & Dysport Q & A

What causes wrinkles?

Wrinkles are folds and fine lines in your skin that vary in depth. Considered a natural part of the aging process, wrinkles are most common in areas exposed to the sun, especially around your eyes, mouth, and neck.

Sun exposure causes 90% of skin aging, but it can also be the result of:

  • Age: loss of elasticity and fat cells in the skin; skin grows drier and more fragile
  • Smoking: less oxygen, blood, and other nutrients because of narrowed blood vessels
  • Genetics: skin texture and structure are directly related to genes

Repeated facial expressions are also to blame for wrinkles. As you use your facial muscles, lines and creases form underneath the surface of your skin. These lines grow more pronounced as the skin ages.

How does Botox®, Restylane, and Dysport reduce wrinkles?

Botox is a popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatment for temporary wrinkle reduction. When a small amount of the medical formula is injected into facial muscles, it prevents them from contracting. As your muscles relax, your complexion smooths.

The medical treatment Botox comes from the same bacterium that causes botulism. While botulism is a dangerous medical condition, the small doses used in Botox can treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Overactive bladder
  • Severe underarm sweating
  • Blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking)

Botox injections have few side effects, and their benefits can last anywhere from three to six months.

What can I expect during my appointment?

Botox treatments only take a few minutes and are relatively painless.

During your appointment, Dr. Sinclair uses a very thin needle to inject small amounts of Botox into your face's treatment areas. If you’re concerned about discomfort, the area can be numbed with topical anesthetic cream in advance.

You start seeing changes approximately three days after your treatment as your facial muscles begin relaxing. In approximately one week, fewer lines and wrinkles are visible in the treatment area.

Your more youthful appearance lasts anywhere from three to six months, but regular Botox treatments can yield longer-lasting results.
